When asked about facing the incomparable Walter Johnson, Yankees outfielder Birdie Cree remarked, “when you see the arm started forward, swing”. The “Big Train” was a dominating twirler who excelled in both the dead and live-ball eras and along with Christy Mathewson was a charter member of the Hall of Fame. The offered Walter Johnson/Bucky Harris dual-signed baseball is signed and dated to the year following Johnson’s induction. Penned on a period OAL Harridge baseball, Johnson (d.1946) personalized and dated his signature in what appears to be a period black fountain pen on the south panel. The bold script reads “Best Wishes-To R.B. Beckert, Walter Johnson, July 8, 1937” and grades an impressive (“6-7”). On the west panel is a similarly written greeting to Mr. Beckert from Senators Manager, Bucky Harris (d.1977). The faint penning is light, but legible, with the signature grading a (“2-3”). Found throughout the vintage baseball are multiple brown stains and surface abrasions which barely impact the autographs. For the vintage autograph hound, this high-profile signed baseball is an essential addition to any serious collection. Auction COA from James Spence Authentications.
