In the latter years of the 19th Century, Whitehead & Hoag issued the first large-scale pin set featuring baseball players. The presented 1-1/4” sepia-toned pin features a cameo image of Hall of Famer Clark Griffith, pitcher for the Chicago Orphans. The pin is in (EX) condition and has Clark’s name, position and team designation around the image. The paper advertising insert located on the reverse of the pin is in excellent condition although it rests slightly off-center. These pins tend to darken over time, but this example is quite clean and displays a sharp image of the former owner of the Washington Senators.
