Willie Howard Mays was born in rural Alabama in 1931, and by the age of 16 it was evident that Mays was going to be a superstar in the game of baseball. On May 25, 1951, Mays got his first opportunity to prove himself at the major league level against the reigning National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies. The offered program is from that May 25th game in Philadelphia, and Mays ended the day 0-for-5, an inauspicious start to Maysí Hall of Fame career. The program has been meticulously scored in pencil and grades (EX-MT). There is only the mildest of toning and some light paper wrinkles. The overall presentation is superb with white interior pages. This keepsake is a must have for the Mays collector. As for Willie Mays, after a discouraging 0-for-12 start to his career, he hit his first home run three days later on May 28, 1951 off of HOFer Warren Spahn.
