Presented is a complete 1953 Bowman Black & White (64) card baseball set. Because Bowman overextended its budget for the cost-prohibitive color edition, the thrifty black and white series was a cost-cutting measure. Regardless, this mixed-grade collection features a nice selection of Hall of Famers and a difficult variation. Spotlighted are #1 Gus Bell (GD), #15 Mize (VG), #27 Lemon (FR), #28 Wilhelm (GD), #39 Stengel (GD-VG), #43 Bevan (VG, 1930 variation) and #46 Harris (VG-EX). The approximate condition breakdown for this edition is 10% (EX or better), 15% (VG-EX), 35% (VG) and 40% (off-grade). About half of the cards reveal varying degrees of wax staining while others include instances of creasing, an example of reverse writing (Lemon) and some centering issues. This set is a solid acquisition for the budget conscious 1950s collector.
