In 1951 the Topps Chewing Gum Company of Pennsylvania put cross-state rival Bowman on notice when the confectioner released its first four baseball card series. The innovative products from Topps ultimately prevailed, as Bowman succumbed to the upstart just four years later. Offered is a near set from one of the more difficult releases from that first year, the 1951 Topps Blue Back issue. This group of (48/52) cards is joined by a trio of examples from the 1951 Topps Connie Mack’s All-Star set. The 1951 Topps Blue Back series has an approximate condition breakdown of 15% (EX-MT or better), 15% (EX), 30% (VG-EX) and 40% (VG or lesser). Highlights include #3 Ashburn (EX-MT), #6 Schoendienst (EX-MT), #30 Slaughter (GD), #37 Doerr (VG) #50 Mize (VG), Also included from the 1951 Topps Connie Mack’s All-Star set is W. Johnson (VG), Mathewson (PR, punched) and Speaker (GD). A nice accompaniment to any classic Topps collection.
