Description

An absolutely tremendous vintage publication lot of (83) different pieces, spanning the years of 1908-1978 with the heaviest concentration in the 1930s and 1940s. The two key items included are: The Book of Baseball - From the Earliest Day to the Present Season by Patten & McSpadden. This is a 1911 first edition hardback book featuring 158-pages loaded with vintage photographs, articles and stories featuring Ty Cobb, Joe Jackson, Tris Speaker, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner and many, many more. The binding, cover and pages are all original, but do show wear, including foxing and edge tattering of the first 16 pages. Mild water damage is found, but 90% of the photos and text are undisturbed. The second key piece is a solid EX/EX-MT version of the August 16, 1954 Sports Illustrated #1 with the interior card pages still firmly attached and in perfect condition (even the business reply card is still firmly attached). Additional notable publications include: 5/2/08 "Harper's Weekly" with all 36-pages and the original cover depicting Napoleon Lajoie, titled, "The Man Behind the Ball." (Cover: PR-FR; Interior: EX). "Who's Who in Baseball": 1935 (Dizzy Dean Cover, EX), 1939 (Jimmy Foxx cover, EX); 1936 "Who's Who in the Major Leagues" by Johnson; 1928 "Reach Baseball Guide" (no front cover o/w VG-EX); 1942-1971 Baseball Digest Lot of (44) with (34) from 1942-1949 (including Aug. 1942 #1 - VG); (14) 1951-1964 Sport Magazine with DiMaggio/Mays cover; and (2) Police Gazette Publications with Joe DiMaggio covers (Aug. 1948 & Aug. 1950).
