The offered selection contains a baker’s dozen key sports publications dating back as early as 1923. The highlight is a lovely (8/16/54) Sports Illustrated #1 grading (EX-MT) with the original interior cards and seldom-seen mailing envelope. The second and third issues are also included, displaying mailing labels and grading (VG-EX). The lot also contains Mid-Week Pictorials from (8/30/23) Babe Ruth (VG) and (4/16/25) Babe Ruth (VG-EX) and LIFE magazines from (5/9/38) Summer Sports Style, (5/1/39) Joe DiMaggio (no label, EX), (3/17/52) with They Ruined Baseball by Ty Cobb (label) and (4/13/62) with the Mantle and Maris Post Ad-cards (label). Rounding out the lot are low- to mid-grade issues including 1946 Baseball Illustrated, 1946 Pro Football Illustrated, 1948 Babe Ruth as I Knew Him and a 1963 Opening of the Football Hall of Fame program signed by Paul Smarks (“9”).
The second issue of Sports Illustrated does still have the baseball card inserts.
