Description

Presented is an item that appeared in our last sale. The winning bidder, although excited about owning this very rare artifact, was inundated with unforeseen medical bills and had to pass. Because of the extreme interest in this piece, we decided to offer it again. The storybook union of Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio was the climax of a courtship that transfixed the country. Married at San Francisco City Hall on January 14, 1954, the jealous DiMaggio and ambitious Monroe called it quits less than a year later. The offered Monroe and DiMaggio wedding chalice is a private memento from these American icons. This chalice was used by the newlyweds at the reception and later belonged to Eleanor Goddard, Monroe’s stepsister. The silver container measures approximately 6” in height and 3” in diameter. The etched head reads Marilyn and Joe, while the reverse confirms the wedding date as 1-14-54. Each side of this goblet exhibits an ornate semi-floral design. The silver body reveals minor oxidation throughout along with minor evidence of cleaning. Despite those negligible flaws, this unique keepsake is in excellent condition. The chalice comes with a letter from Eleanor Goddard, Monroe's stepsister, attesting to the authenticity of the piece.
